According to Damasio, emotions are both innate and also based off the environment. In class, we talked about the example of the baby monkey not being afraid of snakes initially but was suddenly frightened when he saw how the adult monkeys were scared of the snakes. Ultimately, in the reading, I learned that Damasio states that innate emotions are categorized as either primary emotions and learned emotions are secondary emotions. This is a good example of Damasio’s perspective of emotions.
