Damasio's basic idea for his somatic marker hypothesis proposes that emotional processes guide or bias to behaviour, mostly decision making. "Somatic markers" are basically feelings in the body that are preceded by emotions such as anxiety or nausea. According to the hypothesis, somatic markers are strongly depicted in decision making. One example that Damasio uses is the emotion of feeling frightened and we used an example in class of scary music playing in horror movies. It is more about the build up in the situation that results in someone reacting as being scared. Individuals access the value of choices where they can decide using cognitive processes. Another example would be you are an owner for a large company and you know the consequences and responsibilities for it. The somatic maker would force attention to those consequences and it is up to the person to decide what they want to do about it. In addition the somatic maker hypothesis is almost similar to the gut feeling that an individual gets to deciding what is right or wrong.
