The somatic marker hypothesis is the decision-making (impairment) characteristic of patients with vmPFC damage and that it is the reason for faulty decision making or even good decision-making based on the high probability of success. An example that Damasio offers would be the war veteran, a prime example that would experience vmPFC damage from being deployed. The veteran's wife had expressed that prior to her husband getting deployed to war, he was a very down to earth, calm, caring, expressive, empathetic individual and post-war when he arrived back home, he was the complete opposite. He became a new person as he showed no emotions, sympathy or regard towards others.
