Demasio mentions in his book that feelings are intangible and are perceptions. The perception of feelings occurs in the brains body maps. He also mentions that the variation of pleasure or pain is a consistent content of the perception we call feeling. He emphasizes that feeling is ‘the perception of a certain state of the body along with the perception of a certain mode of thinking and of thoughts with certain themes.’ He refers to a philosophical perspective as well, he agrees with Suzanne Langers take of what feelings are which is ‘feeling is a consequence of the ongoing homeostatic process, the next step in the chain.’ Demasio agrees that feelings do arise from homeostatic reactions and not just from our emotions. He then dissects how perceptions work in the mind and how they register to thoughts and feelings. His hypothesis on what feelings are in my viewpoint is examined very carefully; he does take a philosophical approach and explores every process and outcome you could possibly think of when you think of where feelings come from and what they might be.
