Damasio’s view of what is important about Spinoza’s understanding of the mind-body problem is the idea of aspect dualism. The fact that Spinoza thought of this concept 400 years ago was very innovative for his time. Spinoza thought the mind and body are one thing with two aspects. They are related and there is a connection between the two. So any disruption in the neural pathways, the mind is affected. This means that the mind is grounded in the body-proper. At that time, it was thought that all of this is in the control of God and that was the dominant ideology of the time. This idea of aspect dualism is what got Spinoza into trouble.
