What does Damasio see in Ophiocoma wendtii? What is Damasio's purpose in introducing a description of vision in the species Ophiocoma wendtii (p 203)? How does the example relate to the human mind?
Damasio's purpose in exploring the Ophiocoma Wendtii is to prove that "mental images and patterns are closely related and that the former come from the latter" (200). This species in interesting because although it does not have eyes, it have calcium complexes that act as eyes and can detect visual patterns that signal hiding places or even predators. Damasio suggests that O. Wendtii are similar to humans in that a change of the state of the body and the specialized part of the body is altered which then signals the body's central nervous system and causes the organism to act.
