The concept of the notion of balance is important to Damasio's thinking because throughout the book he focusses on homeostasis of the body and mind and how different ideas can correlate but yet compliment each other in some way, for example, emotions and feelings. There are multiple factors that contribute to the notion of balance idea as he brought forth about his views on God and spirituality as he mentioned earlier, "many humans require clarity about the meaning of one's life, which is also similar to James and Spinoza's views on God as pure feelings, source of completion, meaning, enthusiasm for life. The balance he speaks of is the homeostasis of digesting the feelings , emotions and spirituality within as well being with oneself or reaching Maslow's self-actualization phase.
