Lets say for our little play case that a person is dealing with some major anger management issues
A psychoanalysis would dive into details in regards to their personal history, their early relationships with friends, family, strangers, etc in order to promote self insight in regards to their largely unconscious processes so they may process and understand themselves thus they can learn how to cope with their frustrations or other feelings they have at the moment.
Humanist(Rodgers)
Although plenty of listening is involved like psychoanalysis, the entire point would be to frame his life in such a way that his anger management is an avenue for him to grow, the manifestation of anger is most likely due to a need not being met, afterall if he were in a healthy mindset the anger wouldn't be impeding him so much that he needs help with it.
Psychoanalysis assume our personality is largely driven by forces we are unsure of, memory associations, unconscious thoughts and variety of other things, stimulate our emotions or create desire without our active engagement with them, thus people are unaware of themselves and need help in order to be completely realized
Rodger's approach was to see every human being as a plant, with needs that when are satisfied will grow to be a mature, healthy person under their particular context, but if conditions are less then optimal then we can have issues with our growth, however reinterpreting our individual circumstances can re-position the mental landscape to allow for normal growth of the individual
