“I don’t trust men, they all say they’ll be true, but they never are”
Social Constructionist Approach:
A social constructionist would analyze the meaning system the person has to understand their world view, and the social interaction they’ve had to create this belief. The person working with them would have to be able to deconstruct their meaning system so that they are able to understand that it is a construct that they believe and work with them in order to create a new meaning system that challenges this thinking.
Humanistic Approach:
The basis of this theory is that humans have agency and people are in full control of their own choices. This theory approaches the issue by having the person working with them creating a therapeutic relationship that helps them to remove “obstacles” that are hindering their experience and stopping them from growing into their full potential. The most important step he believed, was reaching self-actualization, which would be the role of the therapist. In this example, that would involve removing the person’s mistrusting of men in order for them to grow as a person.
