Social constructionism takes a close look at things that we assume are "natural" and shows us the ways in which even the simplest things we take for granted are constructed.
Intelligence - this has been a reoccurring topic in this course and we have established that the notion of intelligence and what it is comprised of has been created by individuals and society and is not in fact an objectively true/natural entity.
Femininity/Masculinity/Gender - We have created gender roles and stereotypes that to many people seem like a natural expression of biological sex, however as is evidenced by hermaphrodites and trans men/women, as well as all types of different gender expression, these are not binary concepts and they were in fact created.
Careers/Jobs - the idea of contributing to society by doing a task and receiving compensation, this is not an activity that arises as a natural evolutionary necessity. Perhaps being part of a community and pooling resources to ensure the mutual survival of the species/gene, is a natural progression of human evolution; but the system and structures we have in place now are very clearly constructed. We have expected ages people will enter the work force, jobs that are expected for certain people, compensation allocated to varying degrees dependent on the job, gender expectation, race expectation, educational expectation, retirement ages, the list goes on. We have a culture around work that is constructed by various bodies and individuals and it is a very intricate but definite model of constructionism.
