Schneider, who suffered damage to his brain, was able to use the reflexes and skills that he had learned; he had a pre-reflective connection with the world. However, he lost his ability to project himself into the past or future using abstract thought, as other individuals are able to do. It is one of the important characteristics that makes us human. Butt states that Schneider had lost his connection with "the human order." He further claims that if we were unable to make plans for the future or anticipate events, we would lose our sense of self. It is the manner in which body-subjects inhabit time that make them into selves. Living in time gives us a sense of integrity and continuity.

Use the language in the question in your answer. How does Butt relate Schneider to the "existential self"?
