Constructive bankruptcy is the idea that any particular construct(s) held by an individual are not effective in dealing with a specific crisis at hand. If this is the case, individuals may be left feeling helpless, and without agency as a result of lacking appropriate constructs that fit with traumatic events relative to societal norms. An example would be if people in England during war time did not associate with the construct associated with hardship ('Keep a stiff upper lip") and gave into feelings of despair and helplessness, they would feel an overwhelming lack of agency in their ability to deal with trauma and would constitute and example of constructive bankruptcy.
