Pre-reflection in Butt and Damasio
Explain in what way the ideas presented by Damasio about emotion are consistent (or not) with Butt’s claim that “Our connection with others is primarily pre-reflective.” (p. 137)
Butt and Damasio's ideas are consistent in the way that they remove dualism of the mind and body and only look at the automatic bodily responses that govern our social interactions and interactions with the environment. Damasio's ideas of emotions suggest that emotion arises from automatic bodily responses to the environment, where physiological changes, or changes in bodily states, occur from emotionally competent stimuli. The body experiences the emotion before we can cognitively reflect on experiencing the feeling of that emotion. Butt describes our interactions with others as primarily pre-reflective, where we automatically respond without the use of any cognitive reflection of meanings. The pre-reflective interactions is driven by joint action, where new meanings are able to arise from the interactions that would otherwise be unpredictable even after calculating all personal and situational variables; could not be done through reflecting on behavior. Both remove the cognitive aspect when explaining social interactions; explaining social interactions as being an automatic bodily process, before any logical thinking is introduced.
