Damasio relates homeostasis to many aspects of life including the biological, evolutionary, and psychological aspects, but he points out that there is not enough importance put on the homeostasis of sociology and sociological behaviour. The idea of social construction and that the world has a million realities rather than just one is highlighted many time throughout the book and in Chapter 4 relates these ideas to the social world.
An example of humans using homeostasis in society, likely without realizing, is the building of social institutions such as police stations and law institutions. Although these things merely seem like a social construction, they were actually built in reaction to our innate need to feel safe in every day lives. Feeling safe means greater likelihood of survival. Acting in such a way is an exact example of homeostasis: automatic changes in the body (societal) state that maintain a sense of survival and well being.
