Play allows us to creatively engage in mimicking ideal forms. This aids children in becoming members of the society they belong to, allowing them to practice engaging in adult behaviour. Play encourages children to 'act out' observed behaviour in a safe and supported environment with others and is the location when one can work 'above one's level'. This helps to create the bonds we need to feel part of (or conform to) a collective. As social activity can always be reduced to one person, it is incredibly important that the individual engage in play so that, operating in the ZPD, children can initiate themselves into the apropriate discourse.
