The idea of lucky socks could be viewed as part of the placebo affect, as the children see them as a source to their success in their game. The socks do not have an affect on the game rather they provide a sense of confidence that isn't present when they are not being worn. That is why the child that did well in the second game was wearing the socks thus may have been more confident because they had their socks on were as the second child did not and thus performed poorly. As someone of Greek decent the evil eye is a large part of our culture different charms and decorations are used to prevent the evil eye, as a child if I ever had a headache my parents would always perform a short prayer and we would drink blessed oil with holy water sometimes in a specific way, other rituals were also done but as a kid I would feel better, and the headache would go away. The evil eye is usually given when someone is jealous of you (they say something nice about you but in a jealous tone or wish misfortune on you). Another placebo many people use is making cheat sheets for tests or labs but never using them the idea of having that safety blanket gives you the confidence theref
