I believe the placebo effect does help explain the two young athletes performance in the second game. The young athlete that believed the “luck” remained on his socks and underwear possibly did better due to a positive outlook and due to enhanced confidence. The positive outlook perhaps enhanced certain qualities that helped him perform better. Furthermore, certain characteristics being improved could give the illusion of better performance compared to the second child who believed he would not do well because the “luck” had rubbed off. I think the placebo effect is a good way to analyze this specific situation because it can explain how having a positive psychological impact did help the children improve However placebo is very complex as it can’t be supported with scientific data.
