Schemas are a cognitive representation of the environment, not only physical but all the different aspects of a situation, they are like mental patterns that people develop through experiences and would use those patterns that would help them.
For me an example will be that of a classroom, as we enter a classroom we already have those mental models of the things that we are to do in a classroom based on our various experiences like obviously as the teacher is teaching we would not go to the front of the class and start dancing or making noise to distract others and ourselves. We already have those schemas that have shaped have we are meant to act when we are in a classroom environment and the right things that are meant to be done.
A schema is a cognitive process because they are already in us like they mental patterns which guide us into carrying out a behaviour that is acceptable, before we enter into an environment we already have our schemas shaping our thinking about what to do when we get into a certain situation or environment.
