For a concept or skill to be in one’s zone of proximal development would mean that it cannot be accomplished by the individual on their own, however can be completed if others help the individual. The individual is able to do a task, etc. based on support from others. The individual providing the support is the scaffold. The support being provided involves giving hints, reminders and working together but not doing the skill, task or the learning for the individual.
For example, my math teacher gave our class a lesson and then a worksheet on the topic. The worksheet however was a lot more complicated than the lesson taught and I was unable to do it by myself. However, when he gave me a few hints (working within my ZPD) on how to do the questions using the concepts taught in the lesson, I completed the worksheet. My teacher is the scaffold because by him giving me hints, I completed the worksheet. In this example, my teacher appropriately chose a task within my ZPD to work on with me.
