Moghaddam might describe "play" as children doing things or acting in such a way they regularly wouldn't. Examples of this are children playing the teacher, pretending to cook/bake, or imitating a doctor/nurse. Children like to recreate situations they have seen adults be in becuase they begin to undertsand those behaviours attached to those roles better. They observe what they see and imitate it with the best of their ability, and use some of the values and norms they have picked up from their environment while playing too. "Playing" acts as a learning and growing experience for children and helps them understand the social roles in society, where they can act more mature than their age and in turn develop their themselves mentally.
