Strange Situations
This describes the anxiety children feel when left alone with a stranger in a room without the parent. These observations can give a psychologist insight into the child’s abilities in secure attachment, avoidant attachment and resistant attachment. Mary Ainsworth first discovered this. This was an important discovery as we found that these different types of attachments had a great effect on the child’s personality and how the child continues to develop.
Scaffolding
Vygotsky conceptualized the idea that children learned the most effectively through interactions. We see this play out often when a child is unable to learn a skill. At the beginning, they need total assistance to complete a task. Over time, they learn the multiple steps taken to complete a task until they can complete it independently. This was a great breakthrough as this was a clear path to learning skills later on in life.
Ideal Forms
Children observes adults behaviour is everyday settings and develop ideas on how to behave. We see this demonstrated in imitation and play. Children may pretend to act as doctors, teachers, parents, etc. Children are able to learn through playing and using their ideas about these people and what they represent. With this children are able to develop and process their observations in the world.
