Self Reports:
I believe that self reports can be very reliable but can sometimes not be valid due to a couple of factors. The first major factor that may hinder the validity of a self report is being truthful on the assessment. One may not tell the truth on purpose especially if it is a negative trait which they know they possess. The other major factor that can make this assessment invalid is the simple fact that sometimes one may not be aware of certain traits they possess. In this case, having a family member/friend/trained observer conduct the assessment would be more reliable and valid.
I believe the best method to go about this assessment is through a trained observer under one condition: the one being assessed should not know that they are being observed. This is because the person is more likely to behave in a more positive way than usual if they know they are being observed. However, if one is observed without their knowledge, the information assessed would be much more reliable and valid.
