Reliability and validity in measuring personality traits
A. Choose one of the three methods of personality assessment listed below and indicate what factors might limit its reliability and validity.
B. If you had to argue for the superiority of one of these methods over the others, which one would you choose and why?
1. self reports from the persons being assessed
2. reports from close friends and relatives of the person being assessed
3. observations of the person being assessed by a trained observer.
A.) I believe that the personality assessment method of self-reports from the person being assessed might limit the reliability and validity due to the fact that a person may not be aware of certain traits they possess, and/or may over do traits that they believe they do possess, causing self-reports to be unreliable. The idea of the unconscious also comes to mind, when it comes to traits we may repress, and/or lose thoughts or memories when it comes to remembering situation were distinct personality traits would be displayed. Another issue with self-report that limits reliability and validity is the who idea about honesty, and the fact that we may not be completely honest with ourselves and this can be subliminal, making in invalid.
B.) If i had to argue for a superiority of one of these methods over and over, i would choose the personality assessment method of observations of a person being made and assessed by a trained observer, because this method would create reliable and valid finding, based of factual evidence provided by the person being observed, displaying their personality traits. The result won't be fixed towards a tough in which the person may have created without really knowing, or not even aware of based on it being pushed down into the unconscious. The trained observer will be able to asses the individual in a way that provides reliable finding due to the fact that it is based off observations and its valid because the one recourse being used is the person being observed.
