A. The method of using friends and family to assess personality involves the people closest to the subject answering questions about the individual subject in the study. This method of assessing personality could pose questions about validity and reliability due to the personal biases the friends and family have about the subject. Close friends and family usually lose the individual and want to paint a positive picture of the subjects personality-- positive traits such as being humble, outgoing, happy-go-lucky (high on the warmth scale, liveliness scale etc of Cattells 16pf for example). This bias would cause a in issue with validity and reliability of the study because they may or may not ignore the negative traits. This can work both ways if the family does not have a good relationship with the subject and are very negative about them. This study would be asking the family and friends set questions however, there is a high degree of freedom in how they choose to answer the questions and how much they let their personal bias regarding the subject take over.
B. If I could, I would try and create a study using all of the methods. If i had enough time, resources and subjects I would like to get the individual to study themselves, get the friends and family as well as my own observations. I think this could provide a very interesting group of data that could be very useful in explaining not only personality but also how much environment, culture, belief systems etc effect a persons personality and to what extent.
If I was forced to choose i would choose observations by researcher-me- as i find it more useful to work with my own observations and data. It would be more vaild and reliable as there would be little to no outside influences or biases.
