Idiographic: has a focus on individual characteristics whereas nomothetic approach: has a focus on universal personality traits. The idiographic approach is advantageous because it gives a more thorough understanding of the traits in ones personality. However the nomothetic approach is advantageous because you are working with a larger group and can come to conclusions of groups rather than at a individualistic level. The weaknesses however of the idiographic is that you are working with one individual at a time which is tedious and time consuming and in comparison, with the nomothetic approach, is that you are interpreting data collected in the most simplistic terms, and reducing other information. In conclusion, the idiographic approach is more individualistic of the two approaches as it focuses on individuals and not a large group and the nomothetic approach is more atomistic as it puts has a universal conclusion on personally traits.
