The Looking Glass Self is when people shape their self concepts based on their understanding of what others perceive them as. People use the responses that are given to them by others to create their self image. I can relate my older sister to the concept of the Looking Glass Self ever since she was a child. Growing up with her, she was always perceived as the smart and responsible girl. All my relatives would praise her with the expectation that she would become an intelligent successful woman. My sister convinced herself that she was a smart person based on the consistent responses from friends and family that she actually was intelligent. Nevertheless, my sister turned out to be very successful and is now a lawyer working in a firm. I believe this concept of the Looking Glass Self not only convinced my sister that she was smart, but also motivated my sister to become a successful and intelligent person.
