The difference between the concept of sex and the concept of gender, is that the concept of sex is biological, and the concept of gender is cultural. The distinction is relevant to psychologists because the concept of gender can be changed, and is dependant on social construction and societal expectations. The idea that "gender identities are constructed" revolves around these societal expectations. For example, women are expected to be motherly figures, while men are expected to do more physical work. "Gender identities" are not something we are simply born with, but something we are told to believe in and carry out because of societal influences around us while growing up.
