The concept of sex is a result of a biological construction where one is either a male or female. The concept of gender is a result of society's construction of what a male or female's behaviour should be like. Sex can be studied by psychologists by "working in" or taking a causal study approach and gender can be studied through "working out" or taking a normative approach. What is meant by the phrase "Gender identities are constructed" is that the roles of men and women are constructed by society. The norms of how men and women should be have is not a result of one's biological makeup but is a result of societal and cultural expections of each gender.
