1.Sex and gender What is the difference between the concept of sex and the concept of gender? What is the relevance of this distinction to Psychologists? What does it mean to say that “gender identities are constructed” (M p264)?
ANSWER
1. A person's sex is based on their biological make up, such as the genitals they possess, causing low degrees of freedom. However, an individual can be consider sex ambiguous when their sex isn't clear during birth, therefore the infant will undergo surgical operations to better help identify the child as either male or female. Whereas, a persons gender is the social role ascribed to people due to their sex (male or female), providing a higher degree of freedom. It is important and relevant to understand these distinctions in psychology because there are people in societies who possess unique gender identities (LGBTQ +) and therefore, don't fall under socially constructed norms in association with gender, so its important to be aware of the distinction and creation of groups so we can avoid discrimination. Gender identities are contracted based on social norms, which portray the way people are supposed to act based on their sex and gender, however this is challenged with non-conformists who don't classify as neither female or male.
