The looking-glass self is the idea we have of ourselves based on what we think others think of us. Sometimes we are unaware of this and internalize the idea of what others think of us so we think that that is our true self. An example of this is: when I was younger, my teachers all said that I was very smart and I was going to be very successful. This led me to believe that this was true. So, I did everything a smart person would do, such as doing homework and asking questions in class. This led me to actually do well in school because I believed I was smart since everyone told me I was smart. Many people have had experiences similar to these because we always want to live up to the standards that others have set for us.
