I would argue that the views are compatible because they coexist on different social levels. From a very broad perspective the majority of people in society conform to the agreed upon norms - they have a job, pay their taxes, obey the laws, conduct themselves in socially acceptable ways in public, etc. But within this broad framework of conformity in which most of us operate, we each try to carve out our own identity by associating ourselves with various different sub-groups including occupational, recreational, social, and religious organizations.
My social identity is constructed from the sub groups to which I belong,
sub groups that exist within the one larger societal group,
and all of which are operating within the structure of conformity.
