Comparing forms of assimilation At the psychological level (behaviour, thoughts, emotions of individuals) what differences would you expect to observe among people in a nation where minority assimilation was taking place and one where melting-pot assimilation was taking place? Explain the basis for your expectations.
Minority Assimilation is seen when a minority group is expected to adopt the mainstream customs/ideals and norms of the majority group. The majority stays the same.
A melting pot assimilation is seen when all group members develop a new identity based on everyone groups' contributions. Everyone makes changes to their ideals and views.
In a nation imposing minority assimilation, I would expect to see everyone within the nation acting more or less the same way as each other but I would also expect more underlying hostility between groups. Possibly greater instances of displaced aggression due to the fact that the original out-group/minority group will always have to abandon their customs to maintain "fitting-in".
In a nation using melting-pot assimilation, I would expect to see more people more likely to express themselves as individuals without the fear of "fitting-in" due to the fact that all groups' customs and ideals are accommodated for. There should also be less hostility or displaced aggression amongst group members and more cohesiveness.
