Concepts related to social construction Describe how the concept of social constructionism is related to the concepts of reductionism and individualism in the study of psychological phenomena?
Social constructionism is related to the concepts of reductionism and individualism in the sense that the social constructionist approach takes on a non-reductionist approach and looks at group-dynamics rather than an individual to explain psychological phenomenon. In reductionism, the idea is to explain something in its simplest form, sometimes to breakdown processes into biological explanations and form cause and effect relationships. A social constructionist, however, would try to explain something looking at society, cultural norms and how meaning systems attribute to behaviour. Similarly, in individualism, the idea is to find the causes within a person to explain behaviour or to assume the cause of a phenomenon is pre-determined within an individual. However, a social constructionist would argue that we form meanings and the cause of our behaviour comes from cultural norms and expectancies developed as a society, not as individuals.
