I believe these ideas can exist in tandem. Human beings want to be viewed as distinct and positive, yet they conform to group norms. Being perceived as positive necessitates that there are certain group norms you adhere to. For example if everyone is lining up for something and you just go straight for it, you might not be viewed very positively, so norms dictate you stand in the line, though you hope you'll be distinct enough that someone will choose you out of the line to go straight in. We allow ourselves to be guided by group norms to be viewed favourably and then we hope to distinguish ourselves from within the group.
