All steps of Damasio’s tree are forms of homeostasis, increasing in complexity with each step. Uni-celled organisms only exhibit behaviours relating to the bottommost step, which include, immune responses, basic reflexes, and metabolic regulation. In essence, these animals can only avoid danger(such as places which are too warm or not as warm), and seize the opportunity to absorb nutrients when such opportunity arises. Each step of the tree is a continuation from the last, so humans have accumulated each of the five steps through evolution.
Damasio writes such a statement because the steps are accumulative, an organism cannot have feelings without having emotion. These steps also link back to Darwin’s theory of evolution, as these homeostatic principles are predominately existing to aid the organism in surviving and reproducing. Humans are the only organisms which can seek self fulfilment, as they possess feelings. Through many years and constant mutation, organisms can accumulate more steps as they become more complex, this idea also links to the theory of evolution.

Great explanation - do you think you could go up a step if you are missing one of the lower levels on the tree?
