According to Damasio even though feelings do have a very strong biological component, this component is not exclusive as it leaves space for more mental aspect. In order to put across this point he mentions the electrical circuit of a Boeing 777 which is very complicated but not purely automatic as certain components require the mental processes and orders from the pilot. This happens in a pretty straight forward example. He argues that humans are even more complicated, and if the airplane which is simpler doesn't have "feelings" without the pilot interfering, how would humans have actual feelings without some mental process. Additionally he mentions that another way this mental component can be seen is via the fact that we can talk our self's out of emotion if we conclude that that feeling is inappropriate.
