Damasio seems to consider some emotions innate, and some emotions learnt by us. He makes a distinction between primary or early emotions, which are considered to be "hard-wired" (innate), in the individual and also universal, and secondary or adult emotions which are thought to be learnt as they derive from experience and acquired knowledge. Damasio associates primary emotions as part of the limbic system of the brain, and are regarded as the basic mechanism, while secondary emotions arise when one forms experiencing of feelings and also forming systematic connections between categories of objects and situations.
