For Filipinos, pen and paper is not only a medium for writing. It is a living proof on how education is essential to attain success. Spanish colony enslaved Filipinos and held them captive from wars, trade, education and religion for more than 300 years. They robbed Filipinos of freedom and dignity. There were numerous revolutions that aimed to end slavery and captivity--- alliances and organizations were formed to change the unjust treatment of Spanish soldiers. One notable man from the past, Dr. Jose Rizal who dedicated most of his time in education through reading books and writing used his knowledge and words in making Filipino people aware of the happenings in their surroundings. Upon seeing how Spanish treated Filipinos, he felt the burning desire to fight not in a bloody revolution but a peaceful one using pen and paper. Jose Rizal who preferred the civilized way of revolting was the first one to succeed in a peaceful revolution. He wrote numerous articles to let Filipinos open their eyes to put an end to slavery and oppression. Using only pen and paper, Filipinos regained freedom and their true character as a Filipino. This is what pen and paper really is for Filipinos, it is more than a medium for writing but a symbol of education and how it helped in regaining the freedom that was stolen from them.
