Damasio describes a God of Nature, this god is one who simply exists, very similar to an agnostic view. Doing evil would only cause consequences to themselves, Damasio explains that that he is hesitant to group spirituality and science together, as it would become extremely controversial.
Though he emphasizes the importance of science, and that it is possible to break things down to scientific, organic components, we would be missing out on beautiful spiritual experience that are essential to develop altruistic and cooperative behaviour. He believes that God does not perform miracles, that we as people need to work towards a desired result. He mentions that someone who has committed a sin doesn’t need to go to church to pray for forgiveness.
