Charles is a causal scientist and he believes that Cleo's behaviour is a result of a cause-effect procedure. Charles will only be focusing on a emperical evidence that could be tested in a laboratory. His task is to find a single cause that is reliable and could be tested in a laboratory, where, independent variable could be manipulated to find the effect of the dependent variable. Charles could say that Cleo is an introvert and like to keep to herself. This is her personality and her biology (genes ). This could be proven in a laboratory by experimenting on how other introverts react to such a situation. Therefore, when she is with other people, who wants engage in conversation and socialize, she gets frustrated and angry. In this case, her behaviour could be explained using the cause-effect relationship.
Inez, on the other hand, is a normative scientist. She worksout and looks for alternative explanations for Cleo's behaviour. One such explanation could be that she's from a culture that only interact with people of their own culture, her past experiences, the choice of words and the need to be always correct. These things could all provide possible reasoning as to why Cleo behaves the way she does. Sometimes it is hard to provide empirical evidence to prove these reasonings but normative science explores the differences in human beings as we are not constant object or scientific concepts, but rather living, unique, social beings.
