The difference between the two concepts of dark and light social construction, is that dark social construction is more of a causal approach to examining individuals in a social environment, ie. the person is the subject of a social structure and is directly affected by their environment in terms of discourse in part of a mechanistic system. Whereas in the case of light social construction, the individual has agency to create new meanings in discourse. An example of light social construction is in Moghaddam's story of the two friends who begin their conversation speaking to one another about the night before when they had attended a party together, and then turned the conversation towards the lab experiment that one of the friends was organizing. The two friends were able to change the discourse to that of a researcher and an eager participant instead of two friends conversing, to give new meaning to the social interaction so that it would be more productive to the study.
