When considering marriage, people often forget that it is socially constructed. In the beginning of time, humans did not have the contract of marriage. They were with multiple partners and that was the norm. With time, people brought in laws and contracts and decided that when a man and woman are ready, they will get married and with that comes certain expectations and norms. People who do not married are pitied for it is 'weird' to not get married and thought to have some type of sexual dysfunction or personality problem because they are unable to find a partner. In a similar way, gay marriages are looked down as it involves two men or two women getting married, instead of a man and woman getting married. but people often forget that heterosexual marriages were socially constructed as heterosexual relationships were more common back in the day than homosexual relationships.
