Bismillah ir rahman ir rahim (In the name of God, the most beneficent, the most merciful.)
In the U.S, there are many candidates on the ballot who can be elected as president+vice president of the United States.
The goal of democracy in America is to give people the freedom to elect the most capable and just leader to improve the lives of the people. However, in reality due to American culture there are only two viable options for leadership, Democrat and Republican; all other options are generally disregarded. Therefore, a potentially more capable leader who does not conform to the political/ideological beliefs/methods of the two parties is unable to realistically lead the nation. (In America, the party elects their leader which in turn the people vote for in the general election. Therefore a person who does not belong to the political party will not be allowed to represent the party as their leader.)
Media outlets such as Newspapers, Television Networks, etc only acknowledge and report on what the leaders of these two parties are doing and it is generally accepted by these networks that only one of the two leaders will potentially win. On television networks, it is even possible to hear the new anchor ask the guest "Democrat or Republican" as if no other option of leadership exists. There are some expectations to the rule as fringe parties do register votes; however as general rule people are influenced by the culture to make a choice within a limited set of options regardless of the potentially hundreds of choices to elect as president. Therefore a potential reason for this conformity to elect only one of two leaders can be linked to media networks.
Come election time every four years, people make the same choices within the limited set. In the modern era with the rise and predominance of mass media there has not been a president which did not belong to one of the two main parties.
Therefore in conclusion,
Every U.S election, people generally make the same choices within the set of two political parties regardless of the potential options on the ballot. A possible contributor to this is the mainstream American culture/media which only popularize two political parties. It is expected upon people that if one were to vote, the vote will only have real value if it is in support of one of the two parties while in realty, if people were unhappy with the current system of affairs they could elect a different leader.
