My example would be entering the elevator with one person in it. Theoretically, you can choose to stand in any spot, but usually, people choose to maintain a certain distance between them and the other person. While you can stand really close to someone else if you enter a crowded elevator, you never do so if there is just one person in it. If you do choose the spot really close to the other person, they will probably get intimidated and concerned about your intentions. The reason we choose to maintain a certain space between us and the other people in spaces like the elevator is related to culture. As we grow up we gradually learn the idea of "personal space" and are expected to act in accordance with it.
