Yes, I agree that the placebo effect can influence the performance of both players. The child who believed in good luck and obtained the idea that not washing his clothes with soap and wearing them again for the second game would make him win the game actually worked. Because he had this kind of faith that the "winning clothes" is for sure going to make him win for the second time, And this was the twist. On the other hand, the child whose parents washed his clothes kept in his mind that he would not be winning the game of this bad luck that would be surrounding him while playing. The placebo effect is a very complicated concept and I think that until now there is no scientific evidence for it. However, it's a good way to analyze this specific situation because it can explain how having positive/negative psychological phenomena can change anyone's way of thinking and believing in themselves.
