Explain what Moghaddam means when he says, “play … allows children to extend themselves developmentally, to act above their age, to do things as part of a collectivity which they are individually too young to do” (p 158).
Essentially it means that through play, children model the experience that they observe in their surroundings. This modelling or pretend play allows the children to participate in activities such as going to work, cooking dinner or being parents all of which they are too young to participate in. Imitation allows the children to learn and practice cultural norms and through collective play they learn to work together and exchange thoughts and understanding of the social norms that they are modelling. This collective process also increase the zone of proximal development as each child bring more information to the table that may not be known to the other children within the group.
Can you give an example of such play from your own experience?
Prior to starting school I was the Registered Early Childhood Educator I had the pleasure of observing first hand children modelling activities such as grocery shopping or being parents as well as a variety of professions. The favourite of the group was being a doctor and having the patiences lay on the floor and check their heart beats et., things they observed while getting their check-ups .
