The main purpose of Eugenics is to improve the overall genetic quality of the human race. Although it is undeniable that many terrible things have been done in the name of eugenics, this is the unadulterated definition of the term. Similarly, evolution is the genetic change that can be observed through biological successive generations. I believe that whether we are aware of it or not, we are all wired to practice eugenics in an innocent way. Women used to wear huge skirts under there dresses to give the impression that there hips were ideal to bare children, and therefore were more appealing to men. I believe it was even found that facial symmetry is important to how we perceive some as attractive because symmetry equates to physical health. Animals prove themselves to their desired mates too with varying mating rituals. Some animals will also kill their offspring if they are not developing at a rate deemed acceptable by the parent. I believe that unlike animals, humans have agency and and a level of compassion unrivalled by other species, and that we have evolved so much that practices of eugenics that have resulted in the harm of others is cruel, unnecessary, and probably more for sociopolitical reasonings than anything else.

Hello sonnyt2,
I agree with you that we continuously engage in evolution by selecting our mates through succeeding generations. It is also true that the main purpose of eugenics is to improve the overall genetic quality of the human race. However, the main purpose does not tell us "what is meant by the idea of eugenics" as the question asks. The question also asks us "why most people today find the concept offensive". You have all the answers to the question somewhere there in your post, but I suggest being more explicit.
