Behavourists expected the infant monkey to go to the wire ‘mother’, who previously was presented with food. They suggest that everything is learned though conditioning, and that the infant monkey would develop a relationship with the wire ‘mother’ because of the association of food (reward) with the mother. However the infant monkey went to the cloth ‘mother’ when frightened suggesting that an attachment relationship is not developed through reward and punishment but instead in this case physical comfort.
