The idea of Scaffolding is coming from Vygotsky. Vygotsky believed that with adult support child can reach the zone of proximal development that lies beyond the zone of actual development and is not reachable by the child alone. Scaffolding means supporting the child by giving him/her hints, directions, additional information and other support in solving certain problems, but not actually solving problems for the child. This concept is important for Developmental Psychology because it shows the important role environment plays in the development of children. This concept is very useful in the area of education, for example. It can help in the development of the approach to education that will be more beneficial for children than individualistic approach currently preferred in North America.
