The distinctions are; The idiographic approach studies personality by studying each individual as a unique case while the nomothetic approach was based on exploring personality traits among large samples of people that we can arrive at universals. The strengths of idiographic approach are that the findings can determine hypothesis for later study and it also leads to an in-depth understanding of individuals, the weakness of this approach is that it cant be used to predict and control behaviour and also it fails to inform about the universals and consequently meet a key criterion for a science of psychology and it is also time-consuming. The strengths of Nomothetic approach is that it can predict and control behaviour and the approach can incorporate data from much larger populations. the weakness of this approach is that the predictions from the group results may not apply to the individual and it also ignored subjective experience. The nomothetic approach is more atomistic because it studies personality into traits, attitudes, and abilities. The idiographic approach is more individualistic because it studies personality individually basically looking at the uniqueness of each individual rather than a group of people.
